Vinyl Me, Please box set announced!
Herbie Hancock has teamed up with Vinyl Me Please to curate VMP Anthology: The Story of Herbie Hancock — an 8 album, 11 LP to celebrate his 80th birthday, and more than 60 years of altering the landscape of jazz.
The set includes albums spanning over his five-plus-decade career — from early albums as a bandleader, to later fusions of jazz with funk and hip-hop, and Grammy-winning work from the ’00s — these eight albums were selected to represent the scope of his work.
Housed in a custom designed box, the albums have been remastered by Bernie Grundman from the highest quality original audio source available (most of the albums are AAA), and pressed at GZ.
You’ll also receive exclusive access to a podcast series hosted by Touré which features interviews with Wayne Shorter, Corinne Bailey Rae, Robert Glasper, and many more! The first pressing is limited to 1,500 copies and ships Winter, 2020.
The San Francisco Jazz Center has announced a historic Wayne Shorter Celebration concert series with Herbie, Joshua Redman, Kamasi Washington, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Terrace Martin, Ambrose Akinmusire, Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade that will be broadcasted for the first time ever on “Fridays at Five.” For these four-night broadcasts, all contributions will go directly to the Wayne Shorter fund to support his ongoing medical needs. All concerts also feature members of Wayne Shorter’s quartet including pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade. Fridays At Five is SFJAZZ’s new weekly online membership program launched in the face of the COVID-19 crisis to support SFJAZZ’s ongoing operations and artists in anticipation of reopening. The program is supported by a $5 monthly/$60 yearly membership. Direct support of artists is provided via a “tip jar” that is available prior, during and after the broadcast that is split 50/50 between artist and SFJAZZ. For these four concerts 100% of the “tip jar” proceeds will go to Wayne Shorter for needed medical expenses. Herbie’s performance will run on June 26th. Learn more here.

Leading up to the virtual Global Concert, there will be a free series of educational masterclasses, children’s activities and discussions via web conference featuring renowned educators and jazz artists, streamed live via jazzday.com.
The program will also include a panel hosted by Nate Chinen, Director of Editorial Content for WBGO and chief jazz contributor to NPR Music, addressing how International Jazz Day, and art in general, can be a relevant response to the social isolation precipitated by the current public health crisis. The panel will feature artist participants including GRAMMY Award-winning bassist and composer Marcus Miller and legendary South African vocalist Sibongile Khumalo. A live audience will be able to submit questions throughout the session. NPR will co-host a live stream of the virtual International Jazz Day activities. Learn more at jazzday.com
